RONAN – The Ronan Maidens basketball team was dealt a pair of losses last week, facing tough competition in Polson and Loyola at home. Even though Ronan is now in Class B, the rivalry was evident Jan. 24 as hundreds of fans packed the Ronan Event Center for the boys’ and girls’ doubleheader against the Class A foe.
Polson held the Maidens to only two points in the first quarter, breaking open an early 12-2 lead. The Maidens continued to struggle offensively, heading into the break down 22-4.
It was more of the same for Ronan in the third as the Maidens only tacked up a pair of points, trailing 28-6. The Lady Pirates closed the game on a 6-4 run in the fourth to secure the easy 43-10 win.
Ashley Grandchamp led the Maidens with six points, while Raymi Clairmont scored the remaining four.
Riley Kenney paced the Lady Pirates with 25 points, while Heidi Rausch added six. Anna DiGiallonardo tacked on five points.
On Saturday, Ronan looked to gain revenge on Class B talent Loyola Sacred Heart, who decisively downed Ronan earlier in the season.
The Breakers set the tone early on, leading 17-4 at the beginning of the second quarter, before going on an 11-0 run to lead 28-4 at the half.
Loyola continued to roll in the second half, holding Ronan to only 10 total points to capture a 52-14 victory.
Raymi Clairmont continues to be a key player for the Maidens, scoring nine points to lead her team. Courtney Clairmont and Ashleigh Lynch added a pair of points each.
Loyola was led by Kiernan Haggerty’s game-high 16 points, while Kari Tirrell added 11.
Ronan played Hamilton Jan. 31, takes on Deer Lodge Feb. 2 and travels to Troy Feb. 4.
