POLSON — A new and different show opened at the Sandpiper Gallery on March 8. Instead of wine and hors d’oeuvres, cookies were served.

Featured artists for the show were first graders from Mrs. McCrumb’s and Mrs. Siemers’ classes from Cherry Valley Elementary School. The proud artists, parents, grandparents and friends jammed the gallery from 5 to 8 p.m.

The students made paper mache animals with volunteer Heather Holmes, and these creations were on display at the gallery for one night only.

Artist Jerrell Piapot constructed Perry the dinosaur and “painted him brown because dinosaurs are brown.”

Clara Todd made a pink penguin, and Katelyn Hankins crafted a sheep.

“I name my animals by adding a y to the end of their name so he’s Sheepy,” Hankins explained.

“I just like eagles so much when they catch prey from the water,” Jeremiah Coutts said, talking about why he made Sparky the bald eagle.

Holmes was excited by the great parent turnout and would like to hold another show since a goal of the gallery is community participation.
