DAYTON — A house located at 516 B Street in Dayton exploded about midnight on April 13, according to Karen Sargeant, Lake County Sheriff’s Office information officer. One in a row of four rental houses, the house was actively burning when Chief Cliff Fire Department responded, and they immediately requested mutual aid from the Polson and Rollins Fire Departments.
The house directly adjacent to the burning house showed significant structure damage, a third house had some damage to the corner of the structure, and the house located across the street was damaged as well, Sargeant said.
All the houses were unoccupied with damages estimated at about $200,000. Not only were the houses unoccupied, but fire personnel were able to shut off three 500-gallon propane tanks behind each of the three houses, and the tanks were not damaged. Sargeant noted the owner had insurance but his or her name was not released.
After the fires were extinguished, firefighters investigated the blaze. The cause of the fire, Sargeant said, is believed to be a leak in the propane line in the crawl space under the destroyed house. When an electric heater switched on inside, the spark ignited the collected propane and caused the explosion.
