RONAN — The Charlo Vikings cooled the Hot Springs Savage Heat Thursday afternoon, winning the first game of the boys’ 14-C district basketball tournament 44-35.
Both teams fell into foul trouble late in the game, and with 40 seconds left, the Savage Heat pulled within three points of the Vikings to make the score 38-35. With Charlo juniors Tyler Delaney and Tristan Santee sidelined after five fouls apiece, the Vikings played keep-away and managed to sink several free throws by the final buzzer, winning 44-35.
No. 4-seeded Charlo will take on the No. 1 Superior Bobcats at 8 p.m. Friday. The Bobcats earned a bye in the tournament’s first round after finishing the regular season with an 11-1 conference record, their only 14-C loss coming at the hands of the No. 2-seeded Arlee Warriors. The Warriors were slated to play last-place St. Regis at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, and will take on the winner of the third-vs.-sixth-seed game (either Noxon or Two Eagle) at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
In girls’ tourney action, No. 5 Hot Springs beat No. 4 Noxon Thursday morning, 31-30, so the Lady Savage Heat will play first-place Arlee, who’s undefeated in district play, at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
The Two Eagle River Lady Eagles lost to No. 2 Superior, 59-18, so Superior moves on to face either Charlo or St. Regis. Two Eagle will play the loser of the Charlo-St. Regis game in a loser-out contest slated for 11:15 a.m. Friday.
