Chiefs, Maidens struggle toward season’s end

The Chiefs and Maidens tennis teams had a tough week, dropping all the boys’ matches and winning just four of the girls’. On May 1, Ronan had no room for error against visiting Loyola Sacred Heart. The Maidens’ only wins that day came from singles athlete Amber Metzger, who sent Loyola’s Jocelyn Caldwell home with a 6-2, 6-1 beating, and doubles duo Darian Blixt-Leo and Seri Smith. The pair beat Loyola’s Angela Holter and Emily McCue, 6-2, 6-1.
Ronan’s No. 1 boys’ singles player Hunter Shima fought hard against Loyola’s Kalen Christiaens, but eventually fell, 7-5, 6-4, as did Ronny Cullis, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to Nels Gamaas.
On Saturday, Ronan hosted Corvallis on a chilly, wet and windy spring day. Maidens Amber Metzger remained perfect for the week, downing Corvallis’ Annie Sangster, 6-2, 6-2, followed by Brianna Frank with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, win over Keema Moore.
The Maidens head to Divisionals this weekend in Libby.
