ST. IGNATIUS — It was a very windy and cold day at the Jules Karlan Classic in Missoula, but it was a good preview to State.

At the Jules Karlan Classic May 3 in Missoula, the girls’ team had a good showing as Ahlborn took home the top prize in the No. 4 championship. Ahlborn defeated Tess Reier of Fairfield, 6-2, 6-3.

Kristine Warlick of Conrad defeated Bowers in the first round, 6-4, 6-2. Kayla Billette also lost her first match against Conrad’s Annabell Wittmier, 6-4, 6-4. Makepeace won her first match against Superior’s Kate Bullock, 6-4, 6-4 but fell to Conrad’s Emily Weisgram, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals. But Makepeace rebounded from the loss to win third place over Townsend’s Kasee Clark, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.

Bulldogs’ coach Kimimi Ashley said the boys got a chance to see lots of players that they don’t get to see throughout the season.

She was especially impressed with the play of her doubles teams.

The doubles team of Harry Suta and Katz Yelsa finished with three wins and one loss on the day.

“Unfortunately their first loss was the first match of the day and that makes a big difference in where you finish overall in the tournament,” Ashley said. “Just like State, you want to focus hard on winning that first match, but I was pleased with their movement on the court during the tournament.”

The No. 2 doubles team of RJ Blood and ZeeShan Ali also did well, according to Ashley. They finished with one win and three losses.

“In all their matches they were down and started making their fight back into it,” Ashley said. “I was very pleased with how they are playing together right now.”

At home against Big Fork May 1, the Lady Bulldogs tied their opponents 3-3. Sarah Bowers defeated Kianna Wicklund 6-3, 7-6 and Kayla Billette took down Marriah Bradstreet 6-1, 6-1. Briar Ahlborn also defeated Brooke Bonner, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Jane Makepeace fell to McKinze Shults, 6-3, 6-4, as did the team of Cecelia Koskela and Cierra Dougherty to Bigfork’s Alanis Stallknecht and Shelby Scoggins.

The duo of Randi Butterfly and Laura Eggeling lost their match to Makenna Gembala and Madison Fraley.

Felix Sonntag lost to Bigfork’s Colter Mahlum, 6-0, 6-0 while teammate Chris Camel defeated Logan Lamm, 7-5, 6-4. Troy Bontrager defeated Gunnar Bose, 6-2, 6-3 and R.J. Blood was also in the victor in his match, winning, 6-1, 6-0, over Dylan Fraley.

The Mission tennis teams now prepare for Divisional May 11-12 in Troy.
