Editor,
Cheerful Heart, Inc. provides free non-medical services to Lake County cancer patients. We have 30 volunteers who help us serve soup and support patients at the Polson Oncology Clinic, drive patients to appointments and treatments, run errands or provide whatever is needed by cancer patients and their families from light house and yard work to pet care.
As a private nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, we operate on donations from individuals, organizations, groups and grants. Our annual expenses are $10,000, and fortunately we have been able to receive enough to keep operating each year since 2002.
Several organizations and groups need to be highlighted and thanked for their generosity to Cheerful Heart.
Charlo High School girls’ volleyball and boys’ football programs held a bake sale and donated $750 to Cheerful Heart. The athletes sold bake goods and breast cancer awareness items and held a raffle in October. This event raised $1,500 and was divided between Cheerful Heart and St. Luke Healthcare Network.
Several organizations are now sponsoring three months of soup service, which costs $325. The Polson Lions Club sponsored soup November 2011 through January 2012. The Dayton Ladies Aid Society has also donated three months of soup service during 2011.
Cheerful Heart salutes the Country Store for being a loyal and consistent donor since 2002. It would take some research to get an actual dollar amount donated by the store, but we do know that they have donated $150 per month for at least five years.
Donations to Cheerful Heart are used to purchase soup, snacks and drinks served at the Polson Oncology Clinic; to purchase hats, scarves and books for the Resource Library housed on the third floor of St. Joseph Medical Center; to clean hats and scarves; to support the Cancer Support Group; to print brochures, a newsletter published three times a year and a Local Services Available flyer updated and published once a year. We also pay a volunteer coordinator a small amount to keep our programs running.
We thank Lake County for helping us assist cancer patients in the county. Volunteers are always welcome and can learn more about Cheerful Heart by calling 883-3070 or 1-866-538-3070.
