POLSON — Most high school juniors are looking forward to Christmas and maybe some snowboarding, but Kayla Forman and Shaelyn Simshaw are heading off to London the day after Christmas.
The two Polson High School students were selected for the trip last July by the Universal Cheerleaders Association after attending a cheerleading camp/competition at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash. For the UAC competition, Simshaw and Forman were taught a dance and then had to perfect it and perform it in front of the group. The girls also had to do their best jump (they both did toe touches) and perform a cheer.
Both girls have been cheerleaders at Polson High School since they were freshmen, although Forman said she is no longer a PHS cheerleader. Simshaw would like to continue on in the sport and cheer in college.
The girls have to pay their own way to London and attempted some fundraising, although they didn’t raise much money.
Even so, Forman said, “How many times do you get to see London?”
They fly out of Seattle on Dec. 26 and will return the day after New Year’s. As well as sightseeing, they will see a play.
Performing in the London’s New Year’s Day parade is one of the main reasons for the trip. The girls received a video of a dance and learned it for the parade.
Forget the tower of London or the crown jewels; both Simshaw and Forman want to see and ride the London Eye, a 443-foot-high ferris wheel on the banks of the River Thames. Forman also wants a ride on one of the red double-decker buses.
Forman’s parents are Brad and Tina Forman, and Simshaw’s parents are Doane and Judy Simshaw.
