POLSON — Several local residents awaited the Berry family inside Betty’s Diner in Polson last Saturday afternoon. Julie Berry is a cancer survivor, a single mother with four children and the former executive director of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County Coalition for Kids for 11 years.
Berry’s cancer was in remission until January, when she learned it had spread to her liver, bones and lungs. The gathering was an opportunity for community members to show their support for the family by presenting each of Berry’s four children with $950 and several presents. The money was raised through a series of fundraisers put on throughout the community.
“You know you are all so loved by this community, and we all really wanted to give you a wonderful Christmas,” said family friend and event organizer Nancy Hausermann. “We wanted to let you all know that if you ever need a friend, or just someone to talk to, we’re here for you.”
A tearful Berry responded, “This is wonderful, and this wouldn’t have happened without you.”
