PABLO — Pine trees, a man in a buffalo hat in front of his teepee, a bald eagle, a hide drying and, not to be forgotten, Santa flying over the Mission Mountains on a starlit night — all these elements combined in clear, bright colors on Jackson Seifert’s drawing.

With markers, colored pencils, paints and their own ideas, all the fourth-graders at Linderman School in Polson drew a Christmas scene for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe’s Christmas card.

Jackson’s drawing was chosen by the Polson Indian Education committee as the artwork to be used on the Christmas card.

The CSKT Education Department rotates the contest among schools on the Flathead Reservation so every community participates, according to Penny Kipp, department director.

Jackson, his parents Jodi and Tommy Seifert, his 7-year-old sister Bridger, and grandparents Jeanne and Brad Cochran all attended a luncheon in Jackson’s honor at the CSKT complex in Pablo on Dec. 9. Jackson chose the menu, his favorite sausage pizza.

The CSKT Council sponsors the event, and the CSKT Education Department organize it. Jackson also received a $25 gift certificate and 20 Christmas cards to send to his friends and relatives.

CSKT Education staff Miranda Burland, Dana Hewankorn and Bev Michel joined Kipp, Polson Superintendent Linda Reksten and CSKT Communication Director Rob McDonald in congratulating Jackson.

In keeping with children and the Christmas season, Jackson and Bridger both had requests for Santa Claus. Jackson is an Indianapolis Colts fan, so he’s hoping for Colts paraphernali, while Bridger has a list of 17 items for Santa, topped by a blanket and pillow that light up.

Jackson’s drawing of Santa will be delivering CSKT Christmas wishes to approximately 250 people and groups, including President Obama in the White House, according to McDonald.
