POLSON — Home Floor Covering has achieved quite a milestone – 50 years in business under local ownership by the same family, now the second generation.

The business celebrated that achievement with a 50th anniversary party last weekend. And the entire community was invited to come help celebrate, enjoying food, games, giveaways and raffles for such prizes as free pizza for the summer and a stone bathroom vanity.

“It was a way to thank the community for its support for the last 50 years,” said company spokesman Brook Harding. “It was also a way to introduce people to the new location.”

The business that got its start on Main Street is now located at 40324 Enterprise Drive south of Polson just off Highway 93. It’s in a building that owner Gary Green had developed in 2022 as a new home for Home Floor Covering and his other business, Polson Stone and Tile, under the same roof.

Together they offer a large inventory of home design products and an emphasis on service from the moment a customer walks in the door until the final installation.

It all began in 1976 when Mike Durant purchased a flooring store and building on Main Street from the Perkins family and developed the business into Home Floor Covering.

In the early 1980s, Mike married Janice, Gary’s mother. Together the couple grew the business and in the mid-1980s purchased the building next door at 322 Main Street as the new home for Home Floor Covering.

While in high school, Gary was a flooring installer for his parents’ business, heading to the job after school. Then in 2007, he went out on his own and started Polson Stone and Tile, a stone fabricating business.

In 2011, he began operating Home Floor Covering on a day-to-day basis and a year later purchased the business from his parents so they could retire. Three years ago, he moved both businesses into the new building.

Home Floor Covering completely took over the flooring side of the design center, offering hardwood, laminate, carpet, vinyl and tile flooring options as well as window treatments and veneer masonry.

Polson Stone and Tile specializes in fabricating countertops, slab showers, fireplace hearths and other products, using both natural and manufactured stones such as granite and quartz.

Services at the design center range from design consultations, assisting customers in selecting from thousands of samples in the showroom, then installing the chosen product or products.

Two sister companies located in one design center, with a shared phone number and customer service. They can be reached at 406-883-2247.

In addition to owning these two businesses, Gary is majority owner in Polson Auto Parts, the only locally owned auto parts store in Polson, and Green Team Fire Services, which fights wildfires for the Tribes. He also owns Stageline Pizza in Ronan.

Brook describes his employer as “very understanding, and good at putting himself in other’s shoes. He has a great reputation in the community as a soft-hearted person. He is jovial and good at making friends. I have only known him two years, but in that time, we have become fast friends.”
