News from Ronan Library District and Flathead Reservation Zero to Five
RONAN - The Ronan Library is holding a Youth short Story Writing Contest and a Youth Poetry Writing Contest. Group I is open to children entering grades 3, 4 and 5 in the fall. Group II is open to children entering grades 6, 7, and 8 in the fall. Group III is open to children entering grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 in the fall. Submissions must be turned in to Ronan Library by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23. Winners will be announced at the Summer Reading Program Grand Prize Picnic on Friday, Aug. 8.
Writing is a very creative process, allowing self-expression, while also learning language development, enhancing memory, encouraging play with words and being an outlet for creative thinking and emotional expression.
Each group’s winners will receive cash prizes as follows: 1st place is $50; 2nd place is $35; and 3rd place is $25.
The following listed rules should be followed carefully:
- The Short Story must be no more than 2000 words. For the Poetry contest entries may be any style, with a minimum of 8 lines and a maximum of 50 lines.
- Participants must be in the Ronan Library District’s Summer Family Reading Program.
- Youth authors may enter only one short story and one poem.
- Entries must be typed, double-spaced, printed on one side only, minimum margins of one inch on all four sides on an 8.5 X 11 inch paper. You may use the library computers to meet the recommendations.
- Entries must be written during the contest period, 6-9-25 to 7-23-25 and just have the following information on the top right-hand corner of the first page: author’s name, e-mail address, mailing address, phone number, grade you are entering in the fall, category (short story or poetry), and title of work.
- Authors must be amateurs, any earnings from writings may not exceed $500 annually.
- Entries may not have been published prior to the competition and must be original works by the authors.
- Each group will have their works judged by independent local judges and cash prizes will be awarded.
- Manuscripts will not be returned. Authors should turn in a copy and keep their originals. Manuscripts may be displayed by the Ronan Library.
