ARLEE - The old song April Showers sure do bring all the May flowers. The trees are budding out, the grass is growing in leaps and bounds, and the hummingbirds are back to our homes. The songbirds awaken our hearts with joy listening to their morning calls/songs and the robins are hopping across the lawn waiting for that worm to pop up for their daily meal. Ah, the joys of spring. Spring truly brings hope to all of us.

The Arlee Senior Center on Weissinger Road continues to bring delightful, delicious meals on Mondays and Wednesdays at noon for only $4 per meal, and twice a month on Saturdays at 5 p.m. for $5 per meal. These are great times to share and break bread with one another and check on each other. We are blessed with our cooks, Dustin and Randy Tiensvold and Mart Bogess who assists; they keep our meals delivered and the center looking spiffy.

Thanks also to our board members who welcome you, pour your coffee, pick up your plates and visit.

Again, the Tiensvold gardeners are planting our entrance with beautiful flowers. We are looking to enlarge our cement entrance and get the flagpole back up. Those who park in our small lot are encouraged to pull in so others can park and leave a space for those who pick up their takeout meals. Parking on the east side of the lot is diagonal and there is one space for handicapped. Thanks to Wade Gillingham for doing the lawn for the year. We thank Roman Santos for snowplowing this winter.

We here at the seniors also have had hard losses in our lives. Don Hendersen, a beloved senior and patron of our meals, died tragically in April. His family hosted a memorial in April, and we were honored to be able to share memories of Don and his family. This is the time of our lives where many of our peers have left us for the great beyond, and memories of each of them are held dear in our hearts. Prayers go out for all.

On Tuesday, May 20, at 9 a.m., Mandi Jo, 406-253-5114, holds a toenail clinic at the center. If you wish to have your toenails trimmed, call her for an appointment.

The Arlee Schools are busy with track and field sports competitions for all to enjoy. If you follow any of your grandkids/friends and their busy school schedules, don’t hesitate to share with us.

Elections for the Arlee School Board and the levy are now in your mailboxes to fill out and return. Having worked at the school for 30 years, it is important to be aware and support our new generations of students. We need to keep them in the Jocko Valley to help support us seniors.

Other May events you need to follow include Armed Forces Day on May 17, National Maritime Day on May 22, Kentucky Derby on May 1, memories of Mount St. Helens volcano eruption on May 18, the Ascension on May 29, and most importantly, National Smile Day on May 31. Memorial Day is on May 26, with no meal served here that day. Happy May.

Arlee Senior Board Chairman Cherie Garcelon, Vice President Betty Shoemaker, Secretary/Treasurer Anne Stewart, Judy Miller, Litie Willison, Marie Gillette, Ann Younger, Deloris Arrowsmith, Jerry Garcelon, Gladys Brown and Patty Tiensvold.
