Property taxes more painful to wealthy

Once again, Rep. Janna Taylor repeats the rather absurd statement that “no one likes property taxes.” This statement could be tweaked a little and be brought pretty close to being true by saying that rich people don’t like property taxes. Unlike other taxes, property tax weighs slightly more heavily on the wealthy than the rest of us. It could easily be modified to increase this bias.

If you own a house, dig out your property tax statement and look at what it covers. There is a long list of things the tax covers, including schools, police protection, bridge repair, search and rescue, and on and on. It is appropriate that these things are covered (partly) by a tax on property.

I live in St. Ignatius, and my portion of keeping the town running comes to $159 per year. Quite a bargain.

This is the best tax for running local government. Could it be improved? Definitely, but she and I disagree on what the changes ought to be. The changes should favor the 99 percent, not the 1 percent.
