Editor,

While I am not actively supporting Rep. Janna Taylor in the Senate District 6 race, I think the origins of this race should, in fairness, be revisited.

According to press reports, there was an agreement in place between Sen. Mowbray and Rep. Taylor wherein Sen. Mowbray would finish the resigned John Brueggeman’s term in the State Senate, and then run for Rep. Taylor’s house seat, which Janna had to vacate due to the four-term limit. Rep. Taylor would then run for the Senate District 6 seat.

Pretty obviously, Sen. Mowbray decided not to honor the agreement. This is interesting because Rep. Taylor could have theoretically resigned her House seat and been appointed to the Senate seat and thus be the incumbent now. As we consider the glowing testimonials about Sen. Mowbray, do we all just give her a pass for going back on this agreement?

Rep. Taylor has been elected four times to the House, and I suspect many of Sen. Mowbray’s supporters voted for Janna in those races. So why are they throwing her under the metaphorical bus now?

If there is clarification to this issue, I invite Sen. Mowbray and Rep. Taylor to make it.

I hope Sen. Mowbray’s fervent supporters will think about this carefully as it does speak to fundamental fairness.

While I would like to see a moderate Independent in the Senate 6 race, I think all three candidates are qualified, and it’s good to see Mike Larson talking about working for consensus in the middle.
