Editor,

In response to Mr. Jim Pettit’s letter in the May 16 edition of the Valley Journal, once again, Mr. Pettit presents us with his casserole of nonsense. Same old recipe of pious froth, ignorance and rubbish. Mr. Pettit should take the time to listen to the leaders of his own church.

To wit, a very excellent talk recently given by Dieter F. Uchdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, at the April 2012 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, entitled “The Merciful Obtain Mercy.”

Perhaps Mr. Pettit should take heed.

If one wishes to know more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, one might be better advised to skip over Mr. Pettit’s offer and go right to the source: www.lds.org or www.mormon.org. One may visit the local LDS church on Sundays at 10 a.m. at 700 Fourth Ave. SE in Ronan. Visitors are welcome.

As to his knowledge of the Bible, I would opine that Mr. Pettit possesses only superficial knowledge at best; the Bible is something he obviously does not comprehend. In opposition to Mr. Pettit’s comments, Jesus the Christ taught, “Love your enemies; bless them that curse you; do good to them that hate you; and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44; see also verses 45–47.)

In closing, it would be nice if Mr. Pettit were to offer up some evidence to support his statements about the President of the United States of America instead of empty rhetoric. It seems to me it is rather cynical of Mr. Pettit to take from the U.S. government with one hand, and with the other hand, condemn the U.S. government — cognitive dissonance at its best. Dei Gratia Fidei defensor.
