Editor,
If you donate to the Humane Society of the United States and believe that most of your donation goes to animal shelters, think again. But don’t feel alone, because recent polling shows 71 percent of donors mistakenly think HSUS is a pet shelter umbrella group, and that money goes back to local animal shelters. In 2010, HSUS raked in more than $131 million in donations but only gave 1 percent of that to local shelters. Yet they spent 37 percent on advertising. They also spend millions on anti hunting-fishing agendas. In fact, more money goes to their pension plan than to local shelters. So if you donate $100 to HSUS, only one dollar goes to a local animal shelter.
I called the local animal shelter (883-5312) and spoke to the manager today. She told me they do not get a single dime from HSUS. She said she wished she could write a letter to the editor and inform people of that, but because of her position she can not. So I am doing it in hopes of waking people up. You can also find a lot of info at www.humanewatch.org. Please do not donate to the HSUS if you are trying to support animal shelters. Please donate to your local animal shelter. In fact, you can call the number I mentioned above and find out how to donate locally.
