Editor,

I would like to say, “thank you” to those who are supporting our military. I know that there are many of you who understand and wish us well, and I thank you. Thank you to the Ladies Auxiliary that sent me a package for Christmas as well as a couple of nice cards. The last card came on a day that I was struggling, and it really lifted me up to know that you care.

In another matter, I would like to thank Jim Pettit for reminding me why I am here in the desert. I understand he wrote a rather aggressive letter proclaiming that we should vote his conscience instead of our own. I want you to know something. As I sit here working my job, about once per week, sometimes once per month — it varies — I receive an e-mail from the headquarters here on Kandahar telling us to lower our flag for a fallen comrade. We are invited to go to the flight line and honor them by being there as they leave this country to go to their final place of rest. I live in a country that is filled with people, much like Mr. Pettit, who do not want you to have an opinion of your own or to vote your own conscience, but go ahead, Mr. Pettit, that’s why we’re here — this is why we do what we do, so you can have the freedom to express your opinion, no matter what it is. Go ahead; we’re here for you.

Charleen E. Crenshaw
Kandahar, Afghanistan
