Editor,

“Mandatory” community service and no more ”grubby” businesses; here are just a couple of the new ideas for Polson, Montana which have sprung from the new “Envision Polson” program. At the most recent Polson city council meeting Darlis Smith of the Greater Polson Community Foundation has made it clear that the Envision Polson program wants the “grubby” businesses gone from sight in Polson. Polson Superintendant of Schools David Whitesell says Envision Polson will require “mandatory” community service for school children before graduation.

These types of dictatorial measures would seem to me to be something you might expect to find in the former Soviet Union or some other far off tyrannical government which does not recognize private property rights. But believe it or not here we are. Polson, Montana is on the precipice of government gone Soviet style. There is so much more to it all than these two examples but because of their glaring un-American nature it was just too difficult to ignore them.

“Grubby” businesses. What exactly does that mean? Is your business a ”grubby” business? What will you do if your business is in the crosshairs of Envision Polson’s desire to get rid of the “grubby” businesses? Exactly which new business is it that will receive their favor in your stead? What new laws, fines, and penalties will Envision Polson have in store for the existing local private business owners?

“Mandatory” community service for your school children is another Envision Polson goal. How is it that through a program funded by an environmental activist group from Vermont we end up with “mandatory” community service for school children in Polson? Since when has it become the authority of the superintendant of schools to dictate to parents that their child be required to perform a “service” in order to graduate?

Why would the Polson city council abdicate their own responsibility in managing the city’s affairs to an NGO (non governmental organization) who has as its goal the usurpation of the rights of private citizens? Why would the city council allow themselves to violate their oaths of office and to “succumb to the pressure of those who would engraft the sectarian tenets and personal values of some onto the laws which govern all?”

How can something that sounds so good, “Envision Polson,” be so bad?
