Editor,

I recently attended a free presentation called “How to Talk to Your Dog So Your Dog Will Listen” put on by Karen Duty of Hellroaring Kennels. Karen provides boarding and training for all breed dogs. She teaches puppy development, life skills, basic obedience, agility, and dog therapy skills.

The presentation was at her new training center located on the corner of Second Street East and Third Avenue East in Polson.

As a dog owner, I found her information very interesting, insightful and helpful. Using humor and real life examples she presented clear, concise strategies to motivate dogs to meet their owners’ expectations. She said that dogs, while they might understand specific commands, generally readbody language and the tone of a person’s voice far more than words. Finding the right motivation and utilizing it in a consistent, productive way will help a dog learn to behave in an acceptable manner.

In addition to presenting specific examples, she brought in a couple of dogs in training so that we could witness their successes. When the dog or the dog owner had difficulty, Karen used that opportunity to teach directly to the problem at hand. She then invited each person to try simple strategies with the dogs. She utilized kindness and compassion with everyone present, humans and dogs alike.

I really like my dogs, and I want them to be polite and follow commands when given. But I do have a couple of problems with them that I haven’t been able to solve. After Karen’s presentation I went home and applied the principles she discussed with my dogs and, right away, I started to see results. It was very exciting. Her answer to the question, "How do I talk to my dogs so that my dogs will listen?" is "Don’t talk, just do it. Live it."

Karen Duty is a valuable resource for Polson and for persons wanting to strengthen the bonds with their dogs and learn more about training them.

Thank you, Karen, for providing this wonderful service to our community.
