Editor,
The recent death of Andrew Breitbart, the dynamic right-wing provocateur and Republican Maine Senator Olympia Snowe's announcement that she will not run for re-election have a very interesting and meaningful connection.
The primary reason Senator Snowe is leaving Congress is because of the very hyper-partisanship in present day politics. As stated, she is frankly fed up with the polarization that trumps good governance that is driving politics these days. There is no common ground, but only partisan point-scoring that leads to paralyzed politics. Outrageously offensive name-calling and outright manufactured accusations seems to be the rule-of-the-day. And Andrew Breitbart was one of the very visible media players encouraging this political way of life. Being outrageous gets more attention than being authoritative was surely a belief of his, and Senator Olympia Snowe, as an active member of Congress, has had enough of this.
Now, does this mean we have heard the last of Olympia Snowe? I rather doubt that, just as we did not hear the last of former General and President Dwight Eisenhower after he left office. In fact one of probably his most prophetic and important messages to the American people was this: "The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without." Just look at our outrageously expansive and expensive military complex today with troops and equipment spread all over the world! We should have listened.
Point is, it just might be that Olympia Snowe out of Congress can accomplish more than Olympia Snowe in Congress. I'm sure we have not heard the last from her in clearly expressed thoughts, ideas, suggestions and untiring work to help bring some sense, objective leadership, proper debate, integrity, and needed legislation within the Halls of Congress.
