The Polson boys’ soccer season wound up with a couple of tough games against conference rivals.
A trip to Libby last week ended in a trip to the hospital for Polson Pirate Steven Walk, who suffered a broken leg in the first minute of the game. The accident threw the Pirates off track and Libby pulled off a 3-0 win.
“This forced us to make changes to our lineup and took away part of our attack to try to fill in for Steven,” head coach Jess Kittle said. “We were still able to possess the ball through the midfield but we struggled to put shots on frame.”
Walk had his leg braced at the hospital in Libby so he could travel to Kalispell Regional for surgery that same evening, Kittle said. He got a titanium rod and two screws inserted in his lower leg and is expected to make a full recovery.
Two days later, Polson traveled to Columbia Falls, where the Pirates tried to bounce back from a tough week.
“We started out the game very well, with good passing and good ball control, but again we couldn’t convert on our scoring opportunities,” Kittle said. “We let momentum swing to Columbia Falls because we didn’t score when we had the chance; we couldn’t keep the pressure on them and keep them on their heels.”
James Larson was able to get two late goals, but it wasn’t enough to get Polson back in the game. The Wildcats came away with the 6-2 win, ending Polson’s season with a 2-8-0 record (1-7-0 in conference).
