Editor,
As we mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I'd like to thank all first responders for their courage and dedication to duty. These are the men and women, who are always on duty and are vigilant in protecting our lives and property 24 hours a day. First responders put themselves into harm's way every day. They put on their bulletproof vests and stand between us and the criminals. They run into the burning buildings as we run out. They tend to us in a variety of ways.
Mayor Bloomberg has chosen not to invite NYPD, FDNY and EMS first responders to the ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Mayor Bloomberg has, also, refused to allow religious leaders to participate. He claims there is no room for the first responders to attend. Ten years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001, they showed up and there was plenty of room for them.
Those first responders, Police, Fire, EMS and a chaplain were with our brothers and sisters, parents and children who perished in the attacks on 9/11. I have no doubt that many victims were comforted by the presence of the first responders and, even more I'm sure, invoked the name of God (no matter their religion) in their pleas to be saved or in preparation for their certain death.
Politicians and elected officials have made room for themselves. They are certain to put themselves in a place of honor. They are pompous and self-important. No room for the true heroes? Shame on politicians who do not have the moral courage to do the right thing. That weakness is what separates them from the selfless bravery and honor of the first responders.
Thank you, police officers, firefighters, EMS and 911 dispatchers. Our lives are in your trustworthy hands.
To our first responders: "May the Lord keep you. May He hold you in His loving hands and may He never squeeze too tight." (Irish Blessing)
