It was a tough week for the Maidens (3-6) as they dropped two games, falling at home to St. Ignatius 39-32, and on the road against Plains 51-37. After improving so much over last season, the losses were a tough pill to swallow, as the Maidens were building confidence midseason.

“We lost 39-32, but it was a closer game than that,” Ronan head coach Clayton Curley said. “We were down by four, missed a layup and Mission hit their free throws and pulled away. I want to play them again, we’ll probably see them two more times.”

At home against Mission, the Maidens hung close with the Lady Bulldogs, leading them by one point after the first quarter, 6-5. Mission held Ronan to only four points in the second, as the Lady Bulldogs began pulling away, leading 21-10 at the half.

Both teams scored eight points each in the third, followed by a late run from the Maidens, who outscored Mission 14-10 in the final quarter. But it wasn’t enough, and Mission took away its first win of the season, winning 39-32.

Mission was led by Bryanna Steele, who finished the game with 10 points, while Loren Erickson came close with nine.

Ronan sophomore Raymi Clairmont continued to use her length to get to the basket, leading the Maidens with 10 points.

“Raymi shot 56 percent, which is outstanding,” Curley noted. “She’s taking good shots.”

Courtney Clairmont added eight, while Ashley Grandchamp finished with five. Alaina Madsen shot 10-18, and is one of many promising sophomores for the Maidens.

“Alaina is really turning it on,” Curley said. “She’s giving us some great quarters.”

On Saturday, Ronan traveled to Plains (5-5), where the Trotters jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first eight minutes of play, rolling to a 51-37 win.

“We got off to a sluggish start and couldn’t catch back in with ‘em,” he said. “We had 36 turnovers. You can’t win any game (with 36 turnovers), I don’t care who you play. We didn’t play to our potential.”

Plains shot an impressive 52 percent from the field, partly because they converted on Maiden turnovers with easy layups.

Plains’ Kelsey Beagley scored eight of her 14 in the first quarter, as the Maidens struggled with the Trotters relentless full-court press.

Things picked up offensively for Ronan in the second quarter, as the Maidens matched Plains with 12 points, but by that time the Trotters led big, 27-16.

It was more of the same in the second half for the Maidens, as they struggled out of the gate in the third and were outscored 14-7. Maiden captain Ashley Grandchamp nailed three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Maidens fell to 3-6 overall.

Raymi Clairmont and Grandchamp tied for most points, leading the way with 13 apiece, while Courtney Clairmont added another eight.

The Maidens played Florence Jan. 17 and travel to Eureka Jan. 21.
