ST. IGNATIUS — Missed opportunities and errors close to the end zone contributed to Mission’s 6-14 loss against the Cut Bank Wolves.
“Errors, especially in the red zone, hurt us,” Head Coach Rich Ferris said. “We need to play with a sense of urgency to get the ball in the end zone.”
In the first half, the Bulldogs were mere yards from the end zone, with possession of the ball on the five yard line, when a couple of false starts impeded a touchdown.
According to Ferris, good defense in the first half kept the game scoreless up to half time.
A highlight of defense in the first half included a sack by Mission’s Nikko Alexander on Wolves’ quarterback Bryce Mazurkiewicz. Mission’s Scotty Gilleard jumped on the ball, but the Bulldogs weren’t able to convert the play into points.
In the second half, the Wolves’ offense took advantage of Mission errors.
After a Mission fumble, Cut Bank’s Tyler Ollinger gained possession, which paved the way for a Wolves’ touchdown from wide receiver Dusty Berkram. With seven minutes to go in the third quarter, the Wolves picked up the field goal to make the score 0-7.
A high snap later in the quarter to Mission’s Austin Durglo for the punt allowed the Wolves to have possession at the 30-yard line. A defensive error on the Bulldogs allowed a first down for Cut Bank. With one minute left in the third quarter, the Wolves scored another touchdown and a field goal to make the score 0-14.
In the fourth, Mission quarterback Dylan Evans connected with Ryce Hegwood but the Bulldogs were unable to pick up the two-point conversion.
“We have to clean up the little mistakes,” Ferris said after the game.
The Bulldogs won their season opener on Sept. 2 against Plains 41-0. This Friday the Bulldogs travel to Eureka.
