POLSON – James Larson’s second-half goal made all the difference as the Polson boys soccer team defeated Park High School in a non-conference game in Polson on Saturday, 1-0. The Pirates had many opportunities to connect on shots, but bad bounces plagued the team throughout the match. With the win, the Pirates moved to 1-0-1, a win they needed as they host a talented Whitefish team Tuesday at home.
For the goal, Jon Murphy threw a long-distance ball to Larson, who bounced the ball once before hitting a half-volley past the Park’s keeper, Kyle Lavendar, who was coming at Larson to cut down the angle. Larson was able to read Lavendar, slotting the ball past him 16 minutes into the second half.
“We matched up with Park pretty well,” head coach Jess Kittle said. “Our defense didn’t allow very many good looks from the Park offense. We are still working on improving our passing game and shooting on offense.”
“Nick Howell and Caden Von Wildenradt both played solid defense and Murphy was a big contributor from his midfield position,” Kittle said. “We generated some good opportunities but struggled to make the last quality pass or the finishing shot.”
Polson goal keeper Peregrine Frissell made four saves, while Lavendar stopped five shots for Park.
