Editor,

With all the voices speaking out on government spending, when is the last time a reduction of any consequence happened? Well let us consider the voracious beast.

In the published article on the “state of Lake County,” Commissioner Trusler said that “Everything we do is either mandated or authorized by the state.”

“If a candidate claims to want to cut taxes,” Trusler said, “ask what services he or she is going to cut.”

Well Mr. Trusler, in opening the telephone book to Lake County and going down the growing list of various agencies, I could easily offer a dozen or so that could be eliminated. Not that they serve no purpose, but we are all aware that once established, they are never eliminated; right? You went on to speak on the attributes of the county-wide recycling program as “not an economic move because recycling is expensive….” then why not put it on hold for better economic times?

In the news two weeks ago, after the PRFD board meeting in regard to the over-collection of taxes, Mr. Trusler, you described it as “an honest mistake” and further that it “was not substantial.” With the census information available, it seems to me to be very substantial. Why did you not divulge the dollar amount? Of course your first suggestion to return the money to the taxpayers by way of credit was not as attractive to the board as using the money to pay down the debt on the Fairground Fire Station. You know, the fire station that the fire chief and most of the members fought against vehemently, but now seem to absolutely love. I personally would like to have that money back, rather than it being a nice little windfall for the fire department.

Yes, I would agree that the county needs an operational budget. So do us private homeowners. When we are taxed out of our property, you will have to make cuts. Is that where we’re going?
