ST. IGNATIUS – The Mission football team stormed out to a strong start Friday evening at home against Florence but struggled defensively to hold back the Falcons' impressive passing game. The Bulldogs put up eight points during their opening drive when wide receiver Raymond Matt pulled in a pass from Dylan Evans to put up his team’s only touchdown during the first three minutes of the game.
Florence battled back, as Riley Phillips pulled in a 10-yard pass from Zac Newbary at the end of the first quarter, but failed to convert the extra-point kick, allowing Mission to lead 8-6.
Florence’s senior quarterback Zac Newbary was able to eat up yards through Florence’s accurate passing game. All of Florence’s seven touchdowns came in the form of passing, with Newbary throwing all seven.
Evans led the Bulldogs on the ground, carrying the ball times for 76 yards for an average of 4.75 yards per carry.
Senior Austin Durglo had to step up to fill in as quarterback, as Evans left the game in the third quarter due to a leg injury. Durglo carried the ball eight times for 92 yards.
Before becoming injured, Evans completed four of eight passes for 10 yards in the air.
Raymond Matt caught three passes for 10 yards.
On the season, Evans has 65 carries for 333 yards, while Durglo has carried the ball 32 times for a season total of 216 yards.
