To be honest, I never expected to be here. Though I’m certainly glad to be.
Born and raised in Helena, I went to the University of Montana in Missoula for a degree in classics. For those who might not know, that’s the study of ancient civilizations and cultures, primarily Greek and Roman.
You might notice the slight disconnect between studying that and becoming an editor.
There’s more in common there than you might expect, however. It was a writing and research heavy major. I had always been an avid reader, but with classics I had to learn how to dig through ancient texts and articulate what I found in lengthy papers on civilizations about which we can really only speculate. Classics taught me how to find what was important, how best to express my points and make my arguments their most valid.
It ended up being my minor in media arts, though, that started me down the path that brought me here. Thanks to that minor, after college I was able to land a job at a local radio station. For years, I was able to itch my urge to write by copy writing, turning out advertisements and promotions that I would get to hear on the radio. I got to interview people, learning more about my community through what they had to say, learning that I loved that aspect.
Community journalism was something I hadn’t fully considered before. I’d had some involvement in a school paper, but that had sort of slipped through the cracks as I’d gotten older and distracted by other interests. After moving back to Missoula and coming across this opportunity however, it seemed to click into place.
I love learning about a community. I love getting to know its people, meeting Montanans new and old, getting to turn around and share their stories through writing.
