It was an up and down week for the Pirates' track squad as Polson won the Lake County Meet in Ronan Tuesday but finished 10th at the Archie Roe meet in Kalispell Saturday.

The Pirates seemed to be firing on all cylinders at Ronan Tuesday as they scored 112 points to down Charlo, RSI, Arlee and Two Eagle.

"We beat two good teams in the Lake County meet last week with our depth," coach Bob Gunderson said. "Ronan was missing (Jordan) Franklin, which hurt them in the sprints, hurdles, and relays and Charlo has a chance to win the state C boys meet later this month."

The Pirates were led at the meet by Clark Rubel, who earned first-place finishes in both the discus (129 feet, 1 inch) and the shot put (45 feet, 9 and 1/2 inch). Jimmy Bjorge finished first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:51.40 and Mike Devlin had a leap of 19 feet, 9 and 3/4 inches to win the long jump.

Polson had several other top-three finishes as Travis Hays was second in the 800-meter run, Brock Bleazard was second in the pole vault, Riley Sampson was second in the discus, Vince DiGiallonardo was third in the 100-meter dash, Chris Cote was third in the 200-meter dash, Mike Devlin earned third in the 400-meter run, Bjorge was third in the 800-meter run, Alex Nystrom was third in the 3,200-meter run, Jared Rubel ran third in the 110-meter hurdles, Drew Fouty finished third in the pole vault, and Dale Big Sam was third in the shot put. The Pirate 1,600-meter relay team also finished second in their race with a time of 3:44.

The Pirates had a much tougher time at the larger Archie Roe Meet in Kalispell Saturday as Polson compiled just 11.5 points to finish 10th.

Gunderson says he would like to see some improvement from his athletes as the divisional meet approaches.

"Many of the boys seem to have hit a plateau at this point in the season. With only two weeks until the divisional track meet we need to start picking it up in almost all events," he said. "We are fairly healthy at this point and hope to see some improvement as we move toward the end of the season."

While Gunderson said he would like to see some improvements, he also says there are some bright spots at this point of the season.

"Clark Rubel continues to lead our team in the field events and Chris Cote in the track events," he said. "Jimmy Bjorge and Mike Devlin recorded PR's this week in the 1600-meter and 200-meter races."

Clark Rubel once again had the top finish for the Pirates at the Archie Roe Meet, coming in fourth in the discus with a toss of 126 feet, 6 inches. Clark was also fifth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 9 inches.

Devlin finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, Zion Lee was fifth in the pole vault and the Polson 1,600-meter relay team came in fifth as well.

It was also an up and down week for the Lady Pirates as they dominated the competition at the Lake County meet but battled injuries and sickness to finish fifth at the Archie Roe Meet.

The Lady Pirates left little doubt as to who the best girls track team in Lake County was Tuesday as they blew out the competition in Ronan. Polson came away with top finishes in 12 of the meet's 17 events and compiled 157.5 points to nearly double up the second place team (Charlo, 81.5).

Senior Breanne Kelley led the way for the Lady Pirates in Ronan, earning first-place finishes in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and the high jump. Anna DiGiallonardo was not far behind, finishing first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and second in the long jump. Mesa Starkey also had a pair of top finishes, coming in first in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs while Shelby Korpi won the triple jump, Sierra Pete won the 400-meter run and Macall Banner was first in the pole vault.

Polson dominated the short-distance races at the meet, taking first, third, fourth and fifth in the 100-meter dash (DiGiallonardo, Katie Finley, Michaela Krahn and Jewel Zakit-Ackerman), first, fourth and fifth in the 200-meter dash (DiGiallonardo, Alicia Sicz and MacKenzie Banner) and first, third and fourth in the 400-meter run (Pete, Katie Finley and Krahn).

Polson also came away with top finishes in both relay races.

Injuries and sickness took their toll on the Lady Pirates in Kalispell Saturday as they finished fifth at the Archie Roe Meet.

"We lost Sierra Pete to an injury at the Archie Roe. Hopefully, it isn't season ending," Gunderson said. "She pulled up at the end of the 400-meter relay and was unable to participate the rest of the meet. Claudia Hewston had a PR in the 800-meter race, but had to drop out of the rest of her events at the meet due to a severe cold. She has been battling it all week and the continuing cold and wet weather isn't helping anything," he added.

"Mesa Starkey ran a great 3,200-meter time. She has been competing with a lower leg injury for a couple of weeks so we pulled her out of the rest of her events to give it a little extra rest," Gunderson said.

DiGiallonardo and Kelley led the Lady Pirates at the meet Saturday as DiGiallonardo was third in the 100 and 200-meter races and sixth in the long jump while Kelley was second in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Claudia Hewston finished fifth in the 800-meter run, Mesa Starkey was third in the 3,200-meter run, D.J. Conko-Camel was third in the discus and Shelby Korpi was sixth in the triple jump.

The Lady Pirate 400-meter relay team of Finley, Pete, Kelley and DiGiallonardo was fourth with a time of 53 seconds.

Polson's track teams will be at home Saturday as they compete in the Polson Athletic Club Track and Field Invitational. The event begins at 9:30 a.m.
