The Ronan Chiefs’ wrestling team is looking to be a force in its new Class B home this season, with a pair of returning state placers and a solid incoming freshman class. Last season, the Chiefs finished with only 12 wrestlers on the team, but they were 28 strong during their first afternoon practice Nov. 17.
The Chiefs are also entering new competition, as they’re starting their first year as Class B contenders. Ronan returns two state placers, Andrew Teigan, who will likely grapple in the 119-pound class, and Colby Roberts, who will move to the 215 weight class.
Ronan wrestling head coach Dustyn Azure is entering his third season as the head coach for the Chiefs and says he’s excited to coach a big team. He added that for his young team to be a strong contender in a tough Class B, the wrestlers need to get back to basics and work on being technically sound.
“We’re very young this year,” Azure said. “We only have two seniors.”
He added he is also trying a new attack technique from the top position to get good pin points.
“It’s really big to get pin points,” Azure said. “Class B has always been tough ... (But) with our numbers, I think it’s going to fare well for our kids.”
Azure is looking to both his returning state placers Teigan and Roberts to lead his freshman-loaded team this season.
“I need them to lead the way to show the hard work it takes to get (to state),” Azure said.
