POLSON — If a fire can happen at a good time, the structure fire at 806 14th Ave. E. in Polson did. Firefighters were already gathered at the fire hall for the monthly Polson Volunteer Fire Department business meeting when the call came.

When firefighters showed up, there was smoke coming out of the basement. The fire melted one of the hoses on the washer and dryer.

“We believe the cause was electrical in nature, but so much damage was done to the basement, we can’t pinpoint a specific cause,” Polson Volunteer Fire Department public information officer Karen Sargeant reported.

The fire was in the basement of the home, Sargeant explained, and the homeowner thought he put it out with the fire extinguisher, but the blaze flared up again.

Bryce and Miranda Smith, who lived in the house, had a toddler son, Cayden, and two dogs. Everyone, including the pets, exited the house safely.

The basement was destroyed completely, Sargeant said, and the upstairs had smoke and heat damage.

Damages to the building itself are $30,000 to $40,000, Sargeant estimated with at least an extra $20,000 for contents. Many of the family’s clothes were in the basement since the laundry room was located there.

Red Cross was called in and put the family up at the Bayview Inn, Sargeant said.
