RONAN — The Ronan Pioneer Days celebration included an action-packed, three-day rodeo this past weekend.

On Sunday, the open rodeo drew spectators eager to witness the wild and always unpredictable buffalo ride where six adventurous thrill-seeking crowd members try to hold on for eight seconds as a wild buffalo tries violently to launch the rider off their back. Derreck Olson, of Columbia Falls, rode the longest, which earned him first place with a time of 2.34 seconds.

“Peer pressure motivated me to crawl on top of a wild buffalo,” Olson said laughingly. “Riding a wild buffalo was a lot harder and more interesting than I thought it would be. Definitely worth it.”

Starting on Friday, cowboys and cowgirls from across western Montana showed up to test their skills during the rodeo, which included traditional events such as saddle bronc riding, team roping, barrel racing, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, mini broncs and bull riding.
