TROY – The Ronan Chiefs football program is fitting right into their new Class B home. After derailing Bigfork at home in the season opener, the Chiefs traveled to Troy last week, where they scored early and often, totaling 359 yards on 50 carries to win 40-8. The big win allowed for the entire Ronan team to play under the Friday night lights.

“Every kid that traveled to the game got to play and gained valuable varsity experience,” head coach Jim Benn said.

Jake Skelton had 12 carries for 131 yards to lead the Chiefs’ offense.

“Jake had a great offensive and defensive game,” Benn said. “He kept his composure despite the fact that he had three long scores called back.”

Jack Humphreys picked off an interception and ran it back for a 90-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Ryan Pablo picked off an interception as well in the game.

The Chiefs set the tone of the game early, scoring 26 points in the first quarter. Ronan added 14 more in the second quarter to put Troy away for the night. Troy’s only points came in the fourth when Cory Orr ran in for a three yard touchdown.

Senior Marcus Hungerford had 3 carries for 48 yards, and scored the first two touchdowns of the game for the Chiefs.

Chris Clary finished the game with a 5-yard run for a touchdown, while Humphreys had two, and Robbie Gauthier threw a 10-yard pass to put up six points.

The Chiefs host a talented Townsend team on Friday, Sept. 16 at home.

“Townsend is a very solid, experienced team who loves to run the football,” Benn said. “They are physical and exceptionally well coached.”

Coach Benn says his team must not make mistakes.

In the win against Troy, Benn said his Chiefs had five touchdowns called back due to mistakes.

“We have to execute our offense, eliminate penalties, and stop the run,” he noted.
