Florence slips past Bulldog teams

ST. IGNATIUS — It was a dog fight on the court inside the St. Ignatius High School gym Dec. 20, but after the dust cleared, the Florence Falcons walked away the victors, 53-49.
The potential win would have been the first for the Lady Bulldog basketball team, but head coach Les Rice couldn’t have been any more proud of his team.
“Our kids were excited because it was the best game we played all season,” Rice said. “We hadn’t been in that situation before.”
The situation Rice referred to was being within one point in the final moments of the game. The Lady Bulldogs pulled to a close 50-49 in the final moments before Florence snuffed out the light at the end of the tunnel. The Lady Bulldogs are now 0-5. Florence moved to 4-1 overall.
St. Ignatius was without Loren Erickson in the final minutes of the game after she sprained her ankle late in the third quarter. But she still managed to net six points. Stephanie Lewandowski and Bryanna Steele led with 10 points each. Rosie O’Brien scored 17 points to lead the way for Florence.
The boys’ team also lost to the Falcons in Florence, 63-47. Dylan Evans and Stuart Grant combined for 24 points in the Bulldogs’ loss to the Florence Falcons. Jarred Smith-Brown contributed nine and Nikko Alexander five. Florence’s Mike Finlay scored 13 points and Ryne Baerlocher had 11.
The Bulldogs face their next test of the New Year Jan. 3 at Bigfork.
