BILLINGS — The 2021 Class A state girls tennis tournament belonged to the Polson Lady Pirates.
At Pioneer Park in Billings, on Friday, the Lady Pirate doubles team of Berkely Ellis and Qia Harlan captured the doubles championship in a 6-1, 6-1 win over teammates Ara Mercer and Megan Rost. Lady Pirates Taylor Collinge and Clara Todd picked up a fourth-place finish in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 three-set loss.
The doubles team finishes of first, second and fourth place helped collect 37 total team points allowing the Polson tennis squad to finish well ahead of the second-place Whitefish finishers, which posted 19 total tournament points. The Corvallis girls finished third with 14 overall team points.
Lady Pirates Head Coach Bob Hislop took home the fourth state win in his career with state titles in 2008, 2012 and 2018.
On the boys’ side of the net, Michael Smith and Torrin Ellis achieved a state runner-up finish in two sets 6-2, 6-4 to the Hardin doubles team of Ben Noteboom and Kent Swisse.
