PABLO — On a sunny Saturday afternoon, community members gathered with drummers ready and waiting for the 2021 Two Eagle River School graduation.
This year’s outdoor ceremony was framed by pine trees as nine graduates crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.
The day was made even more special due to pandemic challenges. Two Eagle River School remained closed during the pandemic, and so, the students spent their senior year connecting remotely. Their graduation ceremony was a happy reunion.
During an opening speech, Two Eagle River School Superintendent Rodney Bird said: “Our families had to become home schoolers, and the staff had to learn how to engage remotely. It was a challenge all the way around.”
Although this year was a challenge, the students made it through. Bird reflected on this year and said he thought it was even more difficult than last year. He said “this year in particular” was difficult. Last year, the students at least got to be in school until March before the pandemic hit. Bird said the students did an amazing job and made their families and school proud.
The staff has a couple surprises for the students to celebrate their accomplishments for this year. The biggest surprises were the handmade drums that were given to each graduate. They were embroidered with their class number.
The emotions turned to happy laughter when staff shared stories, including the time one student tagged everything with the word “wombat” when students were able to attend school in person, which caused the crowd to laugh with the memory. Overall, the teachers said the students were amazing and did an exceptional job during challenging times.
The Two Eagle River School graduates for 2021 included: Patience Kaori Rose After Buffalo;
Coree Preston Colby-Cadieux; Rachelle Rae Hewankorn; Whisper Leah Horseman-Little Owl; Nehemiah Evan Long; Lawrence Joseph Mahkuk; Katrina Anna Marie Morigeau; Taylor Rae Pierre; and Alissa Lynn Schulz.
