Lady Pirates move to state tournament after regular season domination

The Polson Lady Pirates softball team is having perhaps one of their best seasons ever with an overall season record of 19-1-1.
They dominated the season by out scoring their opponents by a margin of 303-37. In Polson’s 19 wins, 18 have ended via mercy rule, including 10 games in which the Lady Pirate pitching staff held the opposing team scoreless. Class A girls softball games are normally seven innings in duration, and a mercy rule is invoked if a team leads by 10 or more runs after five innings have been played.
On Tuesday, May 17, the hosting Lady Pirates defeated the Ronan Maidens 10-0. Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lady Pirates pushed three more runners across the plate before slugger Kobbey Smith ended the game with a grand slam home run. Smith led the Lady Pirates at the plate going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Polson Pitcher Katelynne Druyvestein picked up the win, allowing one hit, striking out eight and walking one.
On Thursday evening, the Lady Pirates clinched the Northwestern A Conference title as they narrowly slipped past the visiting Columbia Falls Wildkats for a 6-5 win. Mckenna Hanson paced the Lady Pirates at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. In the circle, Druyvestein allowed five runs on 10 hits, striking out seven and walking one.
On Saturday, Polson wrapped up the regular season with a resounding 16-2 win over the visiting Libby Lady Loggers. Both Smith and Josie Caye had home runs as the Lady Pirates scored 16 runs on 14 hits.
Polson obtained the conference’s automatic bid to the state tournament, which will be held in Butte. The team’s first game is on Thursday, May 27, at 3 p.m. and will be against the winner of the Corvallis and Glendive game.
