FLATHEAD LAKE — Five weeks of Flathead Lake fishing entries just concluded with a total of 17,234 lake trout entered.

There are four weeks left in the spring Mack Days event. Entries continue to be taken until May 16. Mack Days events are sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and sanctioned by Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.

The event is used as a management tool to help restore balance in the Flathead Lake by decreasing the population of non-native lake trout and increasing the numbers of native fish. Working together is the only way to reach the goals needed. Each and every angler is part of the success of the events.

There will be up to $225,000 in cash and prizes awarded to competing anglers. The famous $10,000 tagged lake trout, named Jaws, is swimming in the depths of the lake along with three $5,000 fish; five $1,000 fish, and over 9,000 fish with values from $500 to $100.

A $100 tagged lake trout was turned in by Bill Blixt of Ronan who reeled in his catch while fishing along the shoreline. Others were Gene Corne, of Kalispell, for $100; Steve Benson, of Spokane Valley, for $100; Tyler Varga, Kalispell, for $100; Tristan Persico, of Missoula, for $100; Sam Cusker, of Bigfork, for $100; Jason Mahlen, of Kalispell, for $100; and Travis Banyai, Kalispell, for $200.

Winners of the $100 drawings, for the fifth week, were Tom Borr, of Polson; Jerry Benson, of Plains; Kolton Turner, of Kalispell; Jack Kirkland, of Missoula; and Ken Varga, of Kalispell.

Smallest lake trout leaders are now Jack Kirkland and Bob Turner. The largest lake trout entry, so far, is still Riley Andersons with 21.25 pounds and 40 inches.

Friday’s total catch was 1,251. Saturday was at 1,135. Sunday, with raging winds coming in the afternoon, had a total of 673 morning and early afternoon catches.
