MISSOULA – The Loyola Heart Breakers proved why they’re one of the premier basketball teams in the state, cruising to an easy win over the rising Ronan Maidens last week, winning 62-25.
“Loyola is in the top five in the state, and it was tough to hang with them,” head coach Clayton Curley said.
Despite losing by 37 points, Curley says his team played some of the best ball of the season. The Maidens were able to break the Loyola press, but struggled once they reached half court by committing turnovers.
Loyola shot out to a 40-12 lead at the half and rolled to a 62-25 win to improve to 2-0 in conference and 4-1 overall. The Maidens fell to 0-2 in league and 2-3 overall.
Ashley Grandchamp led Ronan with 10 points, while Courtney Clairmont added 7. Raymi Clairmont finished with 3 points.
For the Breakers, Kiernan Haggarty led with a game-high 17 points.
“The girls surprised me with how many good shots they got,” Curley said. “We need to work on defense and break it down. We’re going to work on our sets on offense and defense and get down to the fundamentals.”
The Maidens will begin practice a week before the holiday break ends to improve on what needs to be fixed, as Curley has high hopes for a strong push from his girls in the end.
