Pirates fall to 5-5 with pair of losses

A tough week on the road against Kalispell Flathead and Whitefish resulted in two losses for the Polson Pirate boys’ basketball team. On Friday, Polson took on Flathead, who is currently ranked No. 5 in Class AA and would prove to be a tough team to down on the road.
The Pirates led early with a four-point advantage at the beginning of the second quarter, but Kalispell used an explosive 27-14 run before the break to lead 38-29.
Kalispell continued to put up big numbers in the second half, making it difficult for Polson to catch back up. The Braves outscored Polson 20-12 in the third and held the Pirates to only seven points in the final quarter to win big, 71-48.
Polson’s Tyler Krell had a big night, leading his team with 15 points, while Cody Fischer added 11.
Matt McLean led Flathead with 21, while George Sherwood tallied 17.
The win improved the Braves’ record to 6-3 overall.
On Saturday, the Pirates went back on the road to Whitefish, where the Bulldogs finished strong to secure a Northwest A victory, winning 61-46.
Polson got the game off to a good start, leading early in the first half, outscoring Whitefish 13-9 in the first eight minutes. Whitefish began to hit shots, though, nailing 17 points in the second quarter to regain a 26-19 lead.
Polson matched Whitefish’s 16 points in the third to keep within seven points, but the Bulldogs closed the door in the fourth when they held Polson to 11 points. Whitefish exploded with an additional 19 to win 61-46.
Krell continues to post big numbers for the Pirates, leading his team with 17 points, while Zack Camel put up nine and Vince DiGiallonardo added eight.
Whitefish was led by Cooper Olson, who had 16 points, seven of which came in the Bulldogs’ 17-6 run in the second frame. Teammate Gage Vasquez finished with 13 points.
The Pirates played Ronan Jan. 24 and travel to Stevensville Jan. 26.
