Considering what could go wrong

Editor,

A nice article about the vote coming up for the resort tax and of course the picture of the needing repair roadway (in last week’s Valley Journal). What came to mind for me: I don’t think it will really matter.

In my experience and in the articles I have read about the thousands and thousands of dollars the city has paid out in fines and lost lawsuits to ex-personnel and partners, as well as other undertakings such as showing their skill in only taking two years to find a new city manager, I can’t help but think things will just stay the same.

Again this year, the voters returned the same people to the offices that have run our city and county in the past. I was not surprised when, in the last county commissioner election, the winning candidate (re-elected of course) told us he didn’t have a jail solution and was out of ideas. A good enough answer to get him re-elected, and so, why would one think change is in the making, city or county?

I would feel a lot better being taxed if I thought whatever funds raised would actually, and cost efficiently, be applied to our needed projects. History shows, despite how a rule or law may be written, politicians are not held accountable when using a loophole or two and in effect change how the tax money is used.

Being on the right but outnumbered political side of our area I realize most of your readers will dismiss this view. As is their nature and was proven recently, sticking with the tried and true leaders they put in charge before, eliminates change.

So from that point of view, yeah, support the tax. What could go wrong?
