POLSON — Two horses used for search and rescue, were crowd magnets at the 10th Annual Safety Day held Saturday in the Wal-Mart parking lot. A few lucky visitors even got a free ride on Doc and Tizzy, who belong to Dee and Bryce Eldrich.

Visitors could also watch as the Polson Volunteer Fire Department demonstrated Jaws of Life equipment on a wrecked car. McGruff the Crime Dog and the Crash Dummies were also on hand.

Wal-Mart representative Erin Melugin coordinated a barbecue lunch with all proceeds going to charity.

The event was a tribute to participants and their efforts to keep the community safe, Polson Police Office Chris Wright said

“The weather is better, too,” Wright added, since it rained last year.

Jaws of Life and K-9 demonstrations, a Confederated Salish and Kootenai Game Warden with a bear trap, drug awareness education, suicide prevention, child identification, a child car seat check station, the special response team, search and rescue members plus environmental, personal and bike safety tables contributed to the community event. There were games and balloons for the kids plus law enforcement officers for them to meet.

According to Polson Police Chief Doug Chase, this year had the best attendance yet.
