Grand Old Party is busy

Editor,

I miss my late Uncle Bill for many reasons – his kindness, sense of humor, the way he embraced his large, sprawling family, regardless of race, religion or politics.

And I’m especially missing his wisdom and common sense these days, when his Grand Old Party is busy trying to overturn the results of our election. Well, let’s clarify that. Republicans don’t want to overturn the results of all the races they won, just the results of that one, very significant race they lost.

I’m not particularly happy with the outcome of this year’s election, especially at the state level, where Republicans trounced Democrats by an average of 12 percentage points up and down the ballot. I could say it surely must be rigged, because most Montanans cast their votes by mail (which Trump says is fraudulent), and because, in my lifetime, Montana has never been so Republican. But I won’t, because I’d be telling myself a lie.

So how is it that an estimated 75 percent of Republicans believe the presidential election was rigged? And they believe this despite the fact that Joe Biden beat his opponent by more than 7 million votes and should win the Electoral College by a margin of 306 to 232. They believe this despite the fact that federal and state judges appointed by both parties – and including the Supreme Court – have tossed some four-dozen lawsuits to overturn election results to the curb. And they believe this despite the fact that Trump’s own Justice Department found no evidence of fraud that would overturn the election.

Still, our own Attorney General Tim Fox hitched Montana to yet another spurious lawsuit filed last Tuesday, asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block four battleground states from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, and he was joined by Governor-elect Greg Gianforte.

The Grand Old Party has morphed into the Cult of Trump, willing to undermine our faith in the election and hurl our republic over a cliff at the behest of a demagogue who can’t stand to lose. No wonder I miss Uncle Bill.
