RONAN — The St. Ignatius grapplers finished a strong fourth at a marathon wrestling meet in Ronan on Jan. 6 and 7.

In round one, Mission faced off against Libby but lost 45-39. However, several wrestlers walked away with wins. In the 105-division, Morgan Schultz pinned Dylan Roby of Libby in 2:56; Scotty Gilleard (130) pinned Mitch Haugen in 2:48; and Casey Nitschke (135) pinned Cody Benefield in 5:47. Jacen Peterson (160) won a 3-2 decision over Dylan Berget; Barret Sargent pinned Austin Bailey in 5:27; and Chadd Anderson dominated Gunnar Moe in 3:29.

In the second round, the Bulldogs garnered a win over Florence, 52-18, after taking several open weight divisions. In the 98-division, Greg Weatherwax defeated Torren Lawson 4-1 as Gilleard beat Tanner Lund, 6-4. Nitschke won a major decision over Kody Davidson, 10-1; Steven Bravo (152) pinned Noah Sax in 1:48; Peterson (160) pinned Austin Krier in 5:19; and Anderson took down Keenen Hendrickson in 2:49.

In the fourth round, Mission grappled Ronan and came out on top, 42-39, with pins from Gilleard, Russel Schultz (140), Petersen and Anderson. 

On Saturday, St. Ignatius tangled with Thompson Falls, 46-36, but fell to eventual meet winner Corvallis, 65-15. 

After battling Corvallis, Mission faced another tough competitor in Glacier, 45-33.

Russell Schultz (140) took down Tanner Stupack in 5:51; and Bravo pinned Issac Sacnz in 39 seconds. Jay Wadsworth (119) won a 6-5 decision over Kevin Talcot.

The Arlee Warriors took 10th in the 14-team dual and emerged with some key wins. 

In the first round, Arlee competed against Polson and lost 60-30.

Cameron Dominick (130) pinned Steve Walk in 3:59, and Cody North (215) defeated Kaleb Auld in 1:40. 

Next on the menu was Deer Lodge, and the Warriors made quick work of the Wardens, 36-17, winning several open weight categories. Dominick once again displayed his skill, pinning Dylan Roselles in 1:06. Albert Plant (189) didn’t face a Polson opponent, but handed Deer Lodge’s Colter Lowery a loss, pinning him in 1:26. 

Next, the Warriors confronted eventual runner-up Frenchtown who dominated Arlee, 75-6. Plant provided the team’s only win with a pin over David Anderson in 1:17. 

On Saturday, Arlee didn’t have much time to recuperate from the day before. The Warriors lost to Columbia Falls, 78-6, after forfeiting and losing several weight divisions. Arlee’s Leif Rova (160) provided a win after pinning Jacob Burgess in 3:40. 

In round seven, Arlee fired back against Drummond, 33-29. Arlee’s Nate Bertollt pinned Payden Prince in 1:29; Dakota Paul (152) won a 8-4 decision over Jacob Jerrel; and Rova pinned Austin Martel in 3:00. 

In the Warriors’ final matchup, Thompson Falls squeaked by Arlee, 42-41. Bertollt (145) pinned Jake Nunino in 1:16; North pinned Joe Bowden in 1:04; and Rova won 16-0 over Charlie Confer.
