RONAN – Despite finishing in eighth place at the Western Montana Duals this past weekend, head coach Dustyn Azure is pleased with how his team is moving along. Two wrestlers, Shelby Grant (152) and Quentin Dentin (160), went undefeated over the two-day event, and Colby Roberts, who was sick, came out to score points for the team.
“It didn’t go too bad,” Azure said. “We were a little inconsistent and need to pick up the intensity.”
Ronan began the tournament against the Flathead JV, with Ronan winning 54-29. The Chiefs then faced Noxon, winning big 60-9. Ronan was dealt its first loss of the tournament by Mission, who edged the Chiefs 42-39.
On Saturday, Ronan took on Thompson Falls in round five, winning 57-24. The Chiefs then dropped their second match of the tournament, falling to Libby 56-15. During the final round, Ronan fell to Polson, 48-36.
Earlier in the week, Ronan traveled to the Drummond Quad meet, where Ronan won eight of 14 weight categories. Chase Rhine (119) got the meet off to a solid start, pinning Drummond’s Bridger Deschamps in 3:34. In the 125-pound category, Brandon Dumont pinned Superior’s River Sides in 4:52.
Connor Benn (125) picked up a win after pinning Drummond’s Tony Bergerson in 3:51, while Ronny Cullis pinned Jacob Jarrell of Drummond in 2:38.
In the 152-pound class, Shelby Grant pinned Superior’s Tyler Wharry in 1:38, while Dustin Goldsby secured a win after pinning Drummond’s Levi Burgmeier in 1:38. Michael Irvine (189) pinned Deer Lodge’s Colter Loury in 2:26, and Dumont picked up a second win, pinning Jake Duerr from Deer Lodge in 2:50.
Ronan had a meet at Mission Jan. 10 and travel to the Rocky Mountain Classic in Missoula Jan. 13.
