The Ronan Maidens' basketball team improved to 3-4 last week falling to Deer Lodge, before edging Troy in a pair of road games. Ronan head coach Clayton Curley says he’s gaining ground on turning the Maiden program around, as the girls are starting to gain confidence in winning.

“We’re starting to find a way to win,” Curley said. “We had to get over the loss hump from the past few years.”

Against Troy, sophomore forward Raymi Clairmont stepped up, scoring a career and season-high 23 points to lead the Maidens.

“Raymi stepped up for us,” Curley said. “She shot nine of 17 and that’s pretty darn good. She’s jumping; using her long arms, and starting to pick it up.”

Ashley Grandchamp added another seven points, while Courtney Clairmont and Ashleigh Lynch both contributed four.

Ronan shot out to a 13-8 lead after the first frame, and led 22-21 at the half. Ronan held Troy to only 15 points in the second half, while the Maidens put up 18, rolling to a 40-36 win.

“We ran the full court press on Troy the whole game,” Curley said. “The pressure made them give it up, and we got easy points off of them.”

The Maidens didn’t fare as well at the line, hitting 7 of 18 free throws. Curley says if his team plans on winning a big game, they need to hit the easy shots.

“If we hit those, we could get a good win under our belts,” he said. “We’re taking little steps each week and practice to get better.”

The three wins so far this season have been a big boost for the young team that has experienced rough times in the past.

“I’m seeing confidence being built,” Curley said. “We haven’t won a lot in the past, and (so far this season) we’ve won three close games, all of them within four points.”

On Tuesday, the Maidens traveled to Deer Lodge, where the Wardens started strong and finished on top, 59-26. The Wardens allowed little in the way of offense for Ronan, holding the Maidens to 11 first-half points. By halftime, Deer Lodge led 24-11. The Wardens continued to hold Ronan’s offense at bay as they put up 21 points in the third and another 14 in the fourth to win 59-26.

The Maidens played Mission Tuesday and travel to Plains Friday.
