The Ronan Chiefs’ basketball team was able to pick up one road win this week. After Ronan lost to Deer Lodge 61-57 on the road Tuesday, the Chiefs were able to secure a solid 51-37 win over Troy on the road Saturday.
Against Deer Lodge, the Chiefs began hot, leading 12-9 after the beginning eight minutes of play, and scored another 20 in the second frame to lead 32-14 at the half. The Wardens rallied in the second half, outscoring Ronan 22-10 in the third and 25-15 in the fourth to pull the win away from the Chiefs down the stretch.
Ronan was led by Robbie Gauthier and Brady Oakland, who scored 14 apiece, while Carston Baertsch added another 12.
The Wardens were led by Hayden Benjamin, who scored 11 points, while Jesse Vasquez added 10.
On Saturday, the Chiefs traveled to Troy, where Brady Oakland led Ronan over the District 7-B Trojans. Oakland put up 13 points for his team, while Marcus Hungerford was the only Ronan player to reach double-digits, scoring 10.
The game was tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Ronan picked up the pace in the second, outscoring Troy 18-12 to lead 25-19 at the half.
Ronan continued to roll in the second half as they won, 51-37. The Chiefs won the offensive battle, hitting 17 of 31 shots from the floor, while Troy hit 14 of 40.
The Trojans were led by Cory Orr, who had 14 points. Teammate Cody Orr added another eight.
The Chiefs play Mission on Thursday on the road and host Plains at home Jan. 13.
