RONAN – Two fires by Sloan’s Bridge, 12 miles west of Ronan, are under investigation and suspicious in nature. Initially reported on Thursday, Aug. 13, Sloan fire number one was at 94 acres and Sloan number two fire was at 90 acres as of Friday, Aug. 14.
The Division of Fire has had a number of suspicious starts in the last couple of weeks and would like the public to be on the lookout for suspected arsonists. Another suspicious start was along the Jocko Road east of Arlee.
If anyone witnesses someone setting fires or abandoning campfires, please contact the local police or call 1-800-47-ARSON. It’s an anonymous call and identity will remain confidential. Information can also be reported online at www.wetip.com. Rewards go up to $10,000.
Unattended campfires and other small starts from carelessness have also been a problem. The reservation is in a “very high” fire danger. People are asked to do their part to ensure one less spark. If a small fire becomes a full-blown forest fire, it could lead to arson charges and even a bill for the cost of fire suppression.
