FORT CONNAH – Humanities Montana, in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities, has awarded the Fort Connah Restoration Society, at Charlo, a $5,000 grant for the historical restoration of the 1847 Hudson’s Bay fur trading post.
Fort Connah is considered to be the oldest standing building on its original foundation in Montana. In 2019, the Montana History Foundation awarded its $5,000 grant to the FCRS for the historical restoration of the trading post’s roof.
The 2020 grant from Humanities Montana will go to building windows and dubbing that will be historically faithful to the mid-1840 period.
The FCRS membership is made up of over 300 interested local residents who are history enthusiasts, teachers and business people, along with the generous technical support coming from the Salish Kootenai College.
